Hearty congratulations to Lewes Golf Club for winning the Sustainability Award at the Active Sussex gala awards evening at the Sussex County Cricket ground! The award went to the club or organisation taking steps to reduce their environmental impact and increase biodiversity, while advocating this crucial area of work to others.
The announcement statement said “Lewes Golf Club impressed judges with its commitment to sustainability. Situated within the South Downs National Park, the club treats environmental stewardship as central to everything it does—proving that sport can thrive in harmony with nature”.
The Southwood Foundation has been working on nature recovery with Sussex golf clubs for several years. We helped Lewes Golf Club connect with managers of nature reserves on either side of the course, creating another valuable nature corridor in Lewes. In 2023 the club also kindly hosted our first Nature Links seminar for golf clubs in and near the Weald to Waves 100 mile nature corridor. Nature Links now extends to golf clubs across Sussex and is a thriving network of clubs sharing best practice, lessons learnt and accessing the support available to make changes for nature and climate.
Active Sussex is part of the national Active Partnership Network and works to empower all groups in society to be active. They are particularly focussed on addressing barriers to exercise, including for children and young people, older people, and disabled people and those living with long term health conditions. It is excellent to see Sussex golf clubs being recognised for the excellent action being taken for nature and the environment being embedded into this valuable inclusion work.
